August 06, 2020

Join Maggie McEwen at the Clan MacEwen Tent at this Great Family Event!~

The Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games has enjoyed tremendous success since its inception by Alex Robertson in 1946. The games have had two locations over the past 70 years, Victoria Park and more recently, the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex (Fergus). The Games exemplify all things Scottish with a focus on heavy events, dancing, piping, clans and interactive family fun and community involvement.

The Highland Games originated with the Ancient Celts in Ireland, thriving and evolving in the competitive environment of the clan structure of Scotland. It is commonly believed that in the 11th century, the Scottish King Malcome Canmore perpetuated the entire Games event with a race up a mountain.

Bute Highland Games 2020- Scotland

August 21, 2020

Clan MacEwen Society will be hosting a Clan Tent at this Event

Although Games were held on Bute in earlier times, their exact history is unclear.  The modern Games, as we know them, began in 1947 under the auspices of Bute Shinty and the Amateur Athletic Sports’ Club.

The Founder Secretary, Tom B McMillan, served as Honorary Secretary from 1947 till 1989.  He remained active on the Organising Committee as our Vice Chieftain until his sad death during 1993.  In 1989 Gordon Sutherland was appointed Honorary Secretary until he stepped down at the AGM in June 2008.  At the same AGM David Anderson was unanimously appointed Honorary Secretary continuing in that role until Steve Holliday ‘took up the gauntlet’ at the AGM in 2015 to become only the fourth holder of that post in 68 years!

These Games have gradually grown in status and strength to their present position as one of the major events on the Highland Games’ calendar.

All competitions at the Bute Highland Games are run in accordance with Amateur Rules and Regulations.  The preparatory and organisational work is all carried out by volunteers.

The Cowal Highland Gathering -Scotland

August 26, 2020

Clan MacEwen will have a Hospitality Tent at this Event

The Cowal Highland Gathering held in Dunoon, Argyll, is the largest, most spectacular Highland games in the world. Nowhere else will you see world-class pipers, dancers and athletes competing on such a scale. It’s an unbeatable event for all the family. Just ask the 23,000 visitors who come here every year to soak up the unique, friendly atmosphere and stunning Highland location.

First held in 1894, the event is steeped in history. We celebrate this rich tradition, but we’ve added lots of new elements too. There really is something for everyone, from watching the world championship competitions to running in the 5K fun run. The salute to the Chieftain is one of the highlights. As the sun sets down the Firth of Clyde, the massed pipers and drummers play ‘Highland Laddie’ in unison. It’s an unforgettable experience and a fitting end to this, the most spectacular of Highland games.
